Speaker Kim Roberts

 

Kim Roberts is an Assistant Professor of Operations Management in the College of Business at Athens State University in Athens, Alabama.  Kim holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alabama, a Master’s in Business Administration degree from the University of North Alabama, and a Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership with a concentration in Instructional Technology from the University of Alabama. 

 

Kim has almost 20 years of experience in process engineering, operations management, and project management in the process industry sector.  Her roles included responsibility for safety and environmental compliance, quality control, production, cost control, and people development.  She now teaches operations management and project management in higher education and is certified as a Quality Matters Higher Education Peer Reviewer.  In addition, she serves as a consultant designing, developing, and delivering process technology and management training to businesses.  Her research interests include instructional technology, mobile learning, and process technology.

         

This presentation will share lessons learned from the New York Times Bestseller Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age by Sherry Turkle. 

 

We’ll explore consequences of digital technology, such as sacrificed conversation for mere connection and loss of empathy.  We’ll also discuss the value of face-to-face conversation and steps we can take to improve our conversation skills.
